“Somehow we’ve come to equate success with not needing anyone. Many of us are willing to extend a helping hand, but we’re very reluctant to reach out for help when we need it ourselves. It’s as if we’ve divided the world into “those who offer help” and “those who need help.” The truth is that we are both.”              Brene Brown

My Approach

My work is based on the understanding that people are shaped from a combination of genetics, experience and environment, and the counselling process fosters improved mental and emotional health and mental flexibility. Allowing clients to gain a sense of relief through recognising they are empowered, enabling them to grow and thrive. I strongly believe that people have the capacity to implement change in their life and relationships, and my role is to offer guidance through that journey.

My approach is trauma-informed, client-centred, collaborative (we work together), focusing on strengthening helpful brain pathways while becoming more aware and accepting of emotions. I use Acceptance and Commitment Therapy which is strongly driven by your values, while also striving to match my approach to the needs of each client. Meeting the client where they are involves utilising different modalities that help us work together towards an individualized plan of action to address your concerns and goals. This involves getting to know you because YOU are the expert on all things YOU. I will support you through your development of becoming tuned in to your own processes, enabling you to live your values while living your best life.

I have specialized training in EMDR, a therapy that was developed to help people heal from the emotional distress resulting from traumatic life experiences. EMDR is an integrative psychotherapy approach that has been extensively researched and proven effective for the treatment of trauma and many other mental health problems. To date, EMDR therapy has helped millions of people of all ages relieve many types of psychological stress. I integrate a variety of therapeutic approaches to help clients process past traumatic experiences, reduce physical reactivity, lower anxiety and decrease depression.

I incorporate mindfulness into my work, ensuring I am present for my client, enabling them to feel heard and understood. I am down to earth with an aim of helping my clients become their own therapist by becoming more attuned to their own needs, foibles, behaviours, thoughts and their impact on others. The length of time we work together will depend on your needs and goals.

I work with clients to ride the waves of emotions and experiences, noticing and accepting them rather than working to change or remove thoughts and emotions. Simultaneously helping them recognise that not all thoughts are true and how to make room for thoughts, emotions and sensations that bring about a healthy flow to life.

I bring honesty, authenticity and openness to my practice. I am committed to ensuring that each client receives confidential, ethical service aimed at empowering them throughout their life journey. I practice what I preach and am therefore committed to self-care practices that allow me to conduct my work effectively, ethically and with compassion.
